ELMS stands for e-Learning Management System. ELMS is a completely open source project built on top of the Drupal Content Management System. Drupal is one of the largest open source communities in existence today and gives developers access to thousands of community contributed and supported modules and themes.
ELMS is a configuration of Drupal that combines community modules with modules and themes developed by the e-learning Institute. The result is an incredibly powerful content management system that is geared towards the design and deployment of instructional materials.
ELMS is a staff empowerment system built "For instructional designers, by instructional designers."

History 

ELMS was started to power one Drupal based course in 2007 and now powers 100s at Penn State. Modules created as part of the ELMS project are installed on 1000s of systems globally.
